- Verdict: which fireproof safe fits legal size documents best
The best fireproof safe for legal size documents is the GroTheory Fireproof Document Box, because its 15 in main compartment takes long paperwork without folding and it carries UL94 VTM-0 certification. Pick the SentrySafe HD4100 if you want a rigid key-locked cabinet built around hanging files.
Long paper is the whole problem here. Legal documents run 8.5 x 14 in, and plenty of fireproof boxes are shaped around letter and A4 sheets with interiors nearer 12 in.
A box that makes you fold a deed or a court filing is protecting the paper but not the way you want to store it.
This guide sorts nine fireproof safes by how well they handle long documents, then by fire rating, water protection and lock type. Our fireproof document safe roundup covers the compact end of the market if your papers are letter size.

The best fireproof safes for legal size documents
The GroTheory box is the top pick for most buyers because it combines a wide compartment with a certified fire rating. Every other pick below is the right call for one specific need, from hanging files to password security.
GroTheory Fireproof Document Box: Best for long papers on the go
- UL94 VTM-0 certified
- SGS tested to 5200 F
- 15 x 11 x 5 in main compartment
- 12 detachable A4 accordion folders
- Combination lock
A hard-shell briefcase with a 15 in main compartment that holds long documents flat. The 12 labeled folders keep legal paperwork sorted without a filing cabinet.
Pros
- 15 in main compartment fits long paperwork
- Hard shell resists punctures and tears
- Waterproof silicone coating and zipper
- Back strap slides onto a suitcase handle
Cons
- Shell is not fire-rated steel
- Folder count and storage volume feel tight for large files
GroTheory suits someone who needs legal paperwork protected but also wants to carry it out the door in a hurry. The hard-shell briefcase has a 15 x 11 x 5 in main compartment, which is wide enough for long documents to lie flat, and 12 labeled accordion folders keep categories apart.
The shell is built with a waterproof silicone coating and aluminum foil across 8 layers, and GroTheory says it passed SGS testing up to 5200 F with UL94 VTM-0 certification. That certification covers flame spread, so treat the rating as a strong document box rather than a steel safe.
The interior is more than a big pocket. Two mesh pockets, four A4 mesh pockets, 12 card slots, two USB drive pockets and four pen slots give small items a home next to the paperwork.
The accordion folders detach, so you can pull one category out without unpacking the case.
The combination lock keeps the case shut without a key to lose. A wide handle and a back strap that slides over a suitcase handle make it a practical travel case for closing documents, and the whole box is easy to grab in an emergency.
Buy it for portable, organized storage of long papers. Choose a steel cabinet instead if you want pry resistance and bolt-down mounting.
SentrySafe HD4100 File Box: Best for hanging legal files
- UL Classified for 30 minutes of fire
- ETL Verified water protection
- Fits hanging file folders
- Key lock with two keys
- 38.8 lb steel and composite build
A key-locked cabinet built around hanging file folders, so long documents stay upright and easy to pull. UL and ETL ratings cover both fire and water.
Pros
- Takes hanging file folders
- UL Classified fire rating
- ETL Verified for water exposure
- Two keys included
Cons
- 12 in chamber width limits flat legal paper
- 38.8 lb weight makes it hard to move when loaded
SentrySafe's HD4100 suits a home office that wants a small filing cabinet rather than a briefcase. Its interior fits hanging file folders, so legal documents stand upright and pull out the way they do in a desk drawer.
The cabinet is UL Classified to withstand high heat for 30 minutes and ETL Verified for water exposure. A key lock with two keys keeps the lid closed during a fire and stops casual access.
Built-in straps hold passports and certificates so they don't slide to the bottom.
At 38.8 lb with steel and fire-resistant composites, it stays put on a closet floor. The chamber measures 12 x 8.1 x 11.5 in, so check whether your folders clear that width before you commit.
The 15.5 in exterior width and 14.3 in height keep it compact enough for a closet shelf or under a desk.
The trade-off is flat storage: a 12 in chamber width means legal paper has to fold or stand on edge. Buy it for upright filing and a rigid cabinet, not for laying long pages flat.
Pockrif [1700°F Fire Protection] Large Fireproof Safe: Best for a mixed document and valuables load
- 1700 F fire rating for 35 minutes
- Thermal barrier felt on all 6 inner surfaces
- 3 removable shelves
- 7 locking bolts
- Keypad with alarm and quiet mode
A tall steel cabinet with shelves wide enough for legal folders plus room for cash, passports and digital media. The felt lining covers all six inner surfaces.
Pros
- Thermal barrier on all six inner surfaces
- 3 removable shelves for large folders
- Interior sensor light
- Floor mountable
Cons
- 14.17 in depth makes long folders a snug fit
- 28.5 kg cabinet is heavy to move upstairs
Pockrif suits a household that needs one safe for documents and valuables together. The 6.5 cu ft steel cabinet has three removable shelves, so legal folders can sit on one level while jewelry, cash and passports take another.
The fire claim is specific: 1700 F for 35 minutes, with pre-oxidized thermal barrier felt lining all six internal surfaces. Seven locking bolts, an electronic keypad with emergency keys and an alarm for repeated wrong codes round out the security.
The keypad also offers a quiet mode for discreet access.
An interior sensor light helps in a dark closet. At 28.5 kg it is heavy enough to feel solid and awkward to carry upstairs, so plan where it lands before it arrives.
Four anti-scratch floor pads protect the surface underneath.
The depth is 14.17 in, which is snug for a 14 in folder once you allow for the door. The product notes also warn of a production adhesive odor at first, so air it out before loading.
Buy it for a mixed load and shelf flexibility, and measure your longest paperwork against the interior before ordering.
XPEDITION Fireproof Document Box with Key Lock: Best for flood-prone storage
- 1700 F for 1 hour
- 72 hours of full submersion
- 15.79 x 15.35 in exterior
- Key lock with two keys
- Ergonomic carry handle
A portable key-locked box with an hour of fire protection and a long water rating. The 12.8 in interior width is the number that matters for long papers.
Pros
- 72 hours of submersion protection
- One hour at 1700 F
- Roomy 0.94 cu ft interior
- Comfortable carry handle
Cons
- 4.33 in interior height stacks long paper shallow
- Key lock only, no combination
XPEDITION's box suits a basement, garage or any spot that has flooded before. It claims 72 hours of full submersion protection on top of one hour at 1700 F, which is the longest water window in this group.
The exterior is 15.79 x 15.35 x 6.69 in and the interior is 12.80 x 11.61 x 4.33 in. That 12.8 in width means long paper folds, so this is the pick for water risk more than flat filing.
The 0.94 cu ft interior still leaves room for wallets, medications and phones next to the documents.
A privacy key lock with two keys keeps the lid shut. The ergonomic handle makes it easy to grab during an evacuation, and the whole box is light enough to move alone.
It's built to travel too, so it works in a car, a locker or a campsite as well as a closet.
Buy it where flooding is the bigger threat than fire. Skip it if flat legal storage is the main job, since the interior width won't cooperate.
SentrySafe Fireproof Document Safe: Best for a small desk drawer
- UL Classified for 30 minutes at 1550 F
- ETL Verified for 72 hours of submersion
- 16.5 x 14.8 x 7.6 in exterior
- Key lock with two keys
- Interior straps
A compact key-locked box for A4-sized paper and critical records. The interior is only 12.6 in wide, so long documents need folding.
Pros
- UL fire classification and ETL water rating
- Holds A4 paper
- Straps keep small records together
- 24 lb is light enough to carry
Cons
- 12.6 in interior width means folded legal paper
- 0.36 cu ft fills quickly
SentrySafe's CHW30220 suits a desk drawer or a small apartment where space is tight. It holds A4-sized paper and has interior straps for passports, birth certificates and Social Security cards.
The fire rating is UL Classified for 30 minutes at 1550 F, and the water rating is ETL Verified for 72 hours of submersion. A tubular key lock with two keys keeps the lid closed in a fire.
The exterior measures 16.5 x 14.8 x 7.6 in in a grey and black finish that blends into a home office.
The interior is 12.6 x 9.2 x 5.4 in at 0.36 cu ft. That's a records box, not a filing cabinet, and legal pages will need folding.
The 24 lb weight means one person can lift it onto a shelf, but it's heavy enough to stay put once loaded.
Buy it for small critical records close at hand, and look elsewhere if you need long documents stored flat.
Psisuvry 6.2 Cuft Large Home Safes Water: Best for tall filing stacks
- 6.1 cu ft cabinet
- 3 removable shelves
- Keypad and two spare keys
- Interior light
- Wall and floor mounting
A tall, narrow cabinet that gives legal folders several shelves to spread across. The keypad lock and spare keys handle daily access.
Pros
- Shelves stack long documents vertically
- Keypad plus spare keys
- Interior light for dark corners
- Mounting hardware included
Cons
- 11.81 in exterior width leaves little room for wide folders
- No alarm
Psisuvry's 6.1 cu ft cabinet suits someone with a thick stack of legal folders and no room for a wide safe. It's tall and narrow at 13.78 x 11.81 x 27.56 in, so shelves stack documents vertically instead of spreading them out.
Three removable shelves let you separate case files from other valuables. A keypad with two spare keys handles daily access, and an interior light helps in a wardrobe or closet corner.
The keypad uses an anti-peep design so the code isn't visible to anyone standing nearby.
The build uses solid carbon steel with a 50mm reinforced door and three 20mm locking bolts. Concealed inner anti-pry hinges and a powder-coated finish add durability.
Pre-drilled holes and expansion bolts let you mount it to a wall or floor, which stops anyone from carrying the whole safe away.
The 11.81 in width is the limit: wide legal folders fit best standing on edge. Buy it for vertical stacking in a narrow spot, not for flat storage of long paper.
Broynix 6.0 Cuft Large Home Safes Fireproof: Best for password security
- 6 cu ft cabinet
- Keypad with 3 to 8 digit PIN
- Fireproof and waterproof bag included
- Alarm with quiet mode
- 3 removable shelves
A tall cabinet with a programmable keypad and a separate fireproof bag for the papers you most want protected. The alarm sounds after three wrong codes.
Pros
- Custom 3 to 8 digit PIN
- Included fireproof bag for documents
- Alarm with quiet mode
- 3 removable shelves
Cons
- Steel body is not fire-rated without the bag
- 11.81 in width limits flat filing
Broynix suits a buyer who wants password control without paying for a premium cabinet. The 6 cu ft safe takes a 3 to 8 digit PIN, and an alarm sounds and locks the safe for 60 seconds after three wrong codes.
It ships with a separate fireproof bag for the documents you most want protected. That bag is doing the fire work, since the steel body alone isn't rated as a fire safe.
Plan the bag's placement so your most important papers go inside it first.
Three removable shelves and an interior LED light make the tall cabinet usable. The LED is bright enough to find items without blinding you.
A quiet mode lets you open it without announcing your location, which helps in a shared apartment or dorm.
The 11.81 in width is the same constraint as the Psisuvry, so long folders stack on edge. The three live locking bolts and pry-resistant hinges give it real theft deterrence.
Buy it for PIN security and the included document bag, and pair it with a rated document box if fire protection is the priority.
Amazon Basics 2.13 Cu Ft Fire and Water Safe: Best for paperwork plus electronics
- Intertek fire test to 1700 F for 60 minutes
- 24 hours of water protection to 8 in deep
- Digital keypad lock
- 6 live locking bolts
- Removable shelf and drawer
A steel cabinet with a drawer and shelf that separates documents from hard drives and other valuables. Intertek tested both the fire and water ratings.
Pros
- Intertek tested for fire and water
- Drawer plus removable shelf
- 6 live locking bolts
- Bolt-down hardware included
Cons
- 20.87 in width takes real floor space
- 61.86 kg cabinet needs two people to place
Amazon Basics suits a home office that needs to protect paperwork and electronics in one cabinet. The 2.13 cu ft safe has a removable shelf and a drawer, so documents sit apart from hard drives and small valuables.
Intertek tested it for 60 minutes at 1700 F and for 24 hours of water protection up to 8 in deep. A digital keypad lock and six live locking bolts handle security, and bolt-down hardware comes in the box.
The electronic keypad lock keeps setup simple for a first safe.
The 20.87 in width means legal paper can lie flat on a shelf. That's the widest flat opening in this group, and the reason to choose it over the tall cabinets.
An interior light helps when the cabinet sits in a dim corner.
At 61.86 kg it's the heaviest pick here and needs two people to place. Buy it for flat storage in a home office where electronics also need protection.
Mitlvge 4 Cu Ft 35 Minute Safe: Best for low budgets
- 1700 F for 35 minutes
- SGS-certified fire materials
- 3 removable shelves
- Keypad, keys and external battery box
- Felt-lined interior
A compact tall cabinet with a 14.1 in interior width and three shelves. The external battery box keeps the keypad working when the internal batteries die.
Pros
- External battery box for dead batteries
- Felt interior protects documents
- 3 removable shelves
- Silent mode for discreet access
Cons
- 35 minute fire rating is shorter than the one-hour models here
- 12.1 in depth leaves little room for long folders
Mitlvge suits a first safe or a budget setup where some fire protection beats none. It claims 1700 F for 35 minutes with SGS-certified materials, and the interior is 14.1 x 11.3 x 22.6 in.
That 14.1 in width clears legal paper lying flat on a shelf, which is unusual at this end of the market. Three removable shelves let you stack documents and smaller valuables.
The felt-lined interior protects paper and jewelry from scratches.
A keypad, two backup keys and an external battery box keep access working even when internal batteries die. The external battery box is a real advantage over safes that trap the batteries inside.
The keypad handles 3 to 8 digit codes and triggers a lockout after repeated wrong entries. Silent mode allows discreet opening, and the pre-drilled mounting holes include fireproof plugs to keep the rating intact.
The 35 minute rating is shorter than the one-hour models here, and 12.1 in of depth leaves little room for long folders. Buy it as an affordable flat-storage option and accept the shorter fire window.
How these fireproof safes compare for legal documents
A 14 in opening is the dividing line: only some of these safes let legal paper lie flat, while others force a fold or an upright stack. That single measurement separates the picks more than lock type or cabinet size.

How we chose and compared these safes
We compared the nine models by interior dimensions first, because a safe that won't take long paper flat fails the main job no matter how strong the steel is. Then we weighed the fire rating, water protection, lock type and how easy each one is to move.
Fire claims were checked against the rating language in the product data: UL classification, ETL verification, SGS testing and UL94 VTM-0 certification mean different things and shouldn't be treated as equal. Water claims were read the same way, since submersion hours and depth matter more than the word waterproof.
The score weighs specs, features and how well each safe fits what someone shopping for legal document storage needs. Fit came first, then protection ratings, then practical details like weight, shelving and mounting.
A safe that only protects documents inside a separate bag, like the Broynix, scored lower than one with a rated body.
Does a legal size document fit flat in a fireproof safe?
No, not in most document boxes. Legal paper is 8.5 x 14 in, and the compact boxes here list interior widths between 9.2 and 12.8 in.
That means legal pages need folding or standing on edge unless the safe has a wider opening.
Look for a safe whose interior width or depth reaches 14 in. The Amazon Basics cabinet and the Mitlvge cabinet both clear that mark, and the GroTheory main compartment at 15 in wide does too.
The SentrySafe HD4100 takes legal folders standing upright in hanging files, which is a different solution to the same problem.
When folding is acceptable
Folding works for papers you rarely open: old tax returns, archived insurance records, duplicate deeds. A crease across a legal page is annoying but not fatal as long as the document stays readable.
Skip folding for anything that may be presented in court, notarized or copied at full size. A crease line can affect how a scan reads, and some offices refuse folded filings.
If folding is your only option, use the flat side of the paper and keep the crease along the long edge so it opens like a book.
When you need flat storage
Choose flat storage for deeds, titles, powers of attorney and active case files. These are the documents you may need to produce intact and in a hurry.
If flat storage matters, narrow your shortlist to safes with a 14 in or wider interior and accept a larger cabinet. The fireproof home safe guide explains how cabinet size affects placement and mounting.
A safe that meets the 14 in mark also tends to be heavier, so plan the spot before it arrives.
Fire ratings explained: UL, ETL, SGS and UL94
The rating letters tell you who tested the safe and what they tested. UL Classified and ETL Verified are third-party certifications, while SGS testing and UL94 VTM-0 cover narrower questions.
UL Classified for 30 minutes at 1550 F means the safe kept its interior below the damage threshold during a standardized fire test. That's the rating to look for on a document safe, because paper chars at roughly 450 F and the inside temperature is what counts.
ETL Verified water protection means the safe survived submersion testing. The SentrySafe HD4100 and the SentrySafe CHW30220 both carry it, as does the Amazon Basics cabinet.
The SentrySafe CHW30220's 72 hour rating is longer than the Amazon Basics 24 hour figure.
What SGS testing covers
SGS is a testing firm, and a claim like "tested up to 5200 F" describes the material test rather than the whole safe in a house fire. Treat it as evidence the thermal layers work, not as a full UL classification.
The Mitlvge cabinet cites SGS-certified fire materials alongside its 35 minute rating. GroTheory cites SGS testing for its shell material.
In both cases the number refers to what the material endured, not to how long the whole box keeps paper safe.
What UL94 VTM-0 means
UL94 VTM-0 is a flammability rating for thin materials. It says the material resists flame spread, and it is not the same as a 30 minute fire rating for a whole container.
GroTheory's box carries UL94 VTM-0 certification. That's useful for a fabric-and-foil shell, but a steel safe with a UL classification still offers more protection for the most important papers.
Read the letters on the label and ask what was tested, not just how high the temperature number goes.
Key locks vs keypad locks on document safes
A key lock is the safer bet in a fire, because the lid or door stays shut without needing power. Keypads add convenience but depend on batteries that can fail during an emergency.
The SentrySafe HD4100, SentrySafe CHW30220 and XPEDITION box all use key locks with two keys included. That's simple and reliable, and the spare key gives you a backup.
Keypads suit daily access and stop key loss. The Pockrif, Psisuvry, Broynix and Amazon Basics cabinets all use electronic locks with emergency keys or an external battery box.
Check the backup method before you buy, because a dead keypad on a locked safe is a frustrating morning.
Who should choose a key lock
Pick a key lock if the safe holds documents you open rarely. There's no battery to change and no code to forget, and the lock keeps the lid closed in heat.
Key locks are also less tempting for kids who watch you punch in a code.
Keep the spare key somewhere outside the safe. A key locked inside defeats the whole point during an emergency.
A key hidden in a drawer next to the safe is nearly as bad, so choose a spot away from the room.
Who should choose a keypad
A keypad makes sense for a safe you open most days. The Broynix PIN setup and the Psisuvry keypad both allow custom codes, and the Pockrif adds an alarm after repeated wrong entries.
A PIN you change regularly beats a key under the doormat.
Check that the model includes emergency keys or an external power option. The Mitlvge external battery box and the Pockrif emergency keys both solve the dead-battery problem.
If the safe sits in a humid basement, favor the external battery box so you can swap power without opening the door.
What else to weigh before you buy
Weight and mounting decide where the safe can live. A 61.86 kg cabinet like the Amazon Basics needs two people and a floor plan, while a 24 lb lock box lifts onto a shelf alone.
A floor-mounted safe resists being carried off, but a portable box you can grab is the one that leaves the house with you in a fast fire.
Capacity follows the paper. A 0.36 cu ft box holds records but not a filing stack, while the 6 cu ft cabinets take years of folders.
Match the capacity to how much you actually keep. Measure your current pile of legal folders before ordering, then add room for the next few years.
Water protection is worth checking separately. A UL fire rating says nothing about floods, so look for ETL verification or a silicone-coated shell if your storage spot has flooded before.
Our water and fireproof safe guide compares the models built for both threats. The XPEDITION box's 72 hour submersion claim is the longest in this group.
Matching the safe to the room
A closet or wardrobe favors the tall narrow cabinets from Psisuvry, Broynix and Mitlvge. A home office with floor space suits the Amazon Basics or Pockrif cabinet.
A drawer or a bag suits the SentrySafe CHW30220 or the GroTheory briefcase.
Think about how you'll reach the safe during a fire. A safe bolted in a basement is hard to reach when smoke fills the stairs.
A portable box near the door is easier to grab, even if it offers less theft protection.
Finally, think about access. A safe bolted to a closet floor protects better than a portable box, but a portable box you can grab and carry out may be what saves the papers in a fast-moving fire.
For a deeper look at ratings and sizes, read the fireproof safe for important papers guide.
Verdict: which fireproof safe fits legal size documents best
The GroTheory Fireproof Document Box is the best fireproof safe for legal size documents overall, because its 15 in compartment takes long paper flat and its UL94 VTM-0 certification backs the shell. For a rigid cabinet built around hanging files, choose the SentrySafe HD4100.
Pick by the job: SentrySafe CHW30220 for a small records box, Amazon Basics for flat shelves in a home office, Pockrif for documents plus valuables, XPEDITION for flood risk, Psisuvry or Broynix for tall narrow stacking, and Mitlvge for flat storage on a budget. Measure your longest document against the interior dimensions before you order.

Frequently asked questions
Will legal size files fit in a standard document safe?
Usually not flat. Most compact fireproof boxes are built around letter and A4 paper, with interiors around 12 in wide.
A hanging file cabinet like the SentrySafe HD4100 or a tall steel cabinet with removable shelves gives legal folders more room, though flat legal paper still needs a 14 in opening.
Is a fireproof document box as safe as a steel safe?
They protect against different things. A certified document box with a hard shell and thermal layers is light and easy to grab in an emergency.
A steel cabinet adds pry resistance and bolt-down mounting.
For the most important papers, a steel safe with a fire rating is the sturdier choice.
How long should a fireproof safe protect paper?
Look for at least 30 minutes at a tested temperature. Paper chars at roughly 450 F, so the rating matters more than the outside temperature number alone.
Longer ratings help when firefighters are delayed, but no rating guarantees survival in every fire.
Do fireproof safes also protect against water?
Some do and some don't. ETL Verified water protection means the box survived submersion testing.
A waterproof silicone coating or gasket helps a document box, but a steel safe with a tested water rating is the stronger option in a flood zone.
